Chester A. Arthur became the 21st President of the United States upon the assassination of James Garfield, who was shot by Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881, in Washington, D.C., and died on September 19, 1881. Former Presidents Hayes and Grant were both present for the Swearing-In Ceremony on September 22.
