THE SWEARING IN OF ANDREW JOHNSON

April 15, 1865

Abraham Lincoln had been shot at Ford’s Theatre by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. He died the following day. Johnson took the oath of office on April 15, 1865, becoming the 17th President of the United States, in the presence of cabinet members, several Senators and House members, and other dignitaries.
