OUR ENDURING DEMOCRACY:
A CONSTITUTIONAL PROMISE
The Preamble to the Constitution sets forth the Founders’ purpose in establishing our constitutional republic. Among these intentions is a promise made to “secure the Blessings of Liberty” not only in the present but for future generations. This pledge reflects the Founders’ dedication to the permanence of the Constitution and America itself. The inaugural ceremonies, which have taken place every four years since 1789, in times of prosperity, turmoil, peace, and adversity, demonstrate our renewed commitment to the continuity, stability, and perseverance of our great democracy.
